Christmas in Berlin

There is nothing more enchanting or fairy tale like than visiting Berlin over the Christmas period. With the whole town a blaze with festive lights and German markets popping up everywhere its hard not to feel the joyful magic. Berlin has always been a place we have wanted to visit over this festive period and this year we were fortunate to have had that privilege and yes it was everything we had imagined and more, proving to be the perfect seasonal retreat. With so many markets to choose from there is something for everyone, each with their own magical winter charm.

With almost a hundred different Christmas markets around Berlin, it was helpful to do our research before we made our visit. We found that each and ever one was special in it’s own unique way but these were some of our favourites:

  1. Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt
Renowned for its own unique handmade gifts, the Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most popular Christmas markets in Berlin with almost 600,000 people visiting every year. Manufacturers from across the globe gather here each year to showcase their talents. From arts to delicacies such as white chocolate milk and special cheeses there is something to be enjoyed by everyone and to make things even better you can often try before you buy at the stalls meaning that you won’t miss out on trying a variety of these special products. We also love this market due to its excellent location. Easy to access it is only a short and pleasant walk from Friedrichstrasse station, near a main shopping street decorated in hundreds of lights.
  1. Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus
With the massive iconic Ferris wheel, this market is hard to miss and is one of the oldest markets in Berlin attracting thousands of visitors every year. Decorated in a 1900’s theme this market has a unique look to be remembered and offers a variety of fun, festive activities from ice -skating to a small farm where children can ride on the animals. Of course there are also plenty of interesting stalls to visit where you can shop for gifts or enjoy a bite to eat.
  1. Christmas market at Charlottenburg place
Romantic, enchanting and simply beautiful, this Christmas market is complete with the Charlottenburg palace as its backdrop and features beautiful light installations throughout. As far as decorations go, this was definitely our favourite. The market features traditional wood huts and marquees selling a range of festive treats from hot chestnuts to delicious crepes and mulled wine. There are also many attractions suitable for children such as beautiful carousel set in the Winterwald (winter forest).
  1. The Potsdamer Platz Christmas Market
We loved this magnificent winter wonderland for its numerous sporting Christmas activities from the toboggan run where you could sit back and enjoy views of the Brandenburg gate to ice-skating. Of course the market also featured stalls with delicious food to be enjoyed.
